Combined heat and power units

Combined heat and power boilers, sometimes also known as CHP units, are designed to produce heat and electricity simultaneously. These units are sized to suit large scale commercial applications.

On the heating side, the CHP unit operates in parallel to a boiler. Both heat generators are connected to the heating system when providing heating water or DHW.

The overall efficiency of CHP units can be as high as 95 percent.

Design & Technology

Viessmann is a leader in the development and manufacture of CHP units with over 3,000 systems already installed. Thanks to the comprehensive standard equipment level of its products, Viessmann can be proud of many satisfied customers.

CHP units are not only the right choice for property developers of residential homes and housing estates; their efficiency and economy also make them equally attractive in many other applications. For example:

  • Commerce and industry
  • Food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, etc.
  • Tourism
  • Pubs, hotels, etc.
  • Local and district heating associations
  • Municipal authorities, contractors, etc.

CHP units for heat and power

Using a process often referred to as cogeneration, our compact Vitobloc 200 appliances are designed as decentralised combined heat and power boiler units with a bias towards heating. These comparatively small units generate electricity for consumption on site. The heat that is generated by this process is used simultaneously, almost without losses, for heating and hot water. Any additional power that is generated can be exported back to the grid in return for remuneration.

Combined heat and power boiler units up to 530 kWel and 660 kWth

Utilising a CHP unit in a commercial setting is extremely environmentally friendly. In addition to the primary energy savings of up to 36 percent, the CO2 emission is significantly lower than with conventional production of electricity and heat.

With more than 25 years' experience in this product area, we offer efficient gas operated systems for combined heat and power generation.

The types of combined heat and power boilers we offer:

Stirling engine CHP boilers

Stirling engine CHP boilers use an external combustion engine. When the boiler is fired up, the engine is heated to produce hot water. Stirling engine CHP boilers are generally quieter and more efficient than internal combustion engines.

Internal engine CHP boilers

Designed to be used for larger-scale applications such as hospitals, internal engine CHP boilers use fuel to drive a turbine connected to an electricity generator. The heat generated from this process is collected and used to produce hot water for the heating system and water supply

The benefits of using a CHP boiler in a commercial environment

  • CHP technology qualifies for the UK government’s Climate Change Levy Exemption
  • High electrical efficiency, resulting in the highest possible power bias for maximum economy
  • Viessmann CHP units are equipped for mains substitution operation with no increase in the idle current demand
  • Suitable for operation with natural gas, biogas, sewer and landfill gas
  • Remote monitoring and automation systems allow for greater control
  • CHP units operate with great environmental responsibility. In addition to the primary energy savings of approx. 36%, CO2 emissions are significantly lower compared to a conventional central power station
